Sustainability

Just off the world-renowned Bahnhofstrasse in the heart of Zurich’s historic Old Town, the Widder Hotel is a one of the most special and unique boutique hotels in Zurich and perhaps in all of Switzerland that dates back to the 12th century. The topic of sustainability is therefore of great importance to us.

For us at the Widder Hotel, it is all about taking into account and harmonizing the needs and concerns of people, the environment and the economy in equal measure.
Sustainability is a process - a long road that we will certainly take. Compliance with legal requirements is not enough for us; we want to set an example and exceed it. We summarize our efforts in our sustainability mission statement.

Get an overview of our measures in the areas of economic, social and environmental sustainability. After all, we want our next generations to be able to experience these unique places as well.

  • Earthcheck

The Alex Lake Zürich, Storchen Zürich, and Widder Hotel have reached an important milestone through EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification, and advisory group for travel and tourism.

  • Handling Plastic

In our hotels, we have almost entirely eliminated single-use plastic in guest areas. We also encourage our suppliers to switch to environmentally friendly packaging and are partnering with CleanHub since 2022.

  • Fundaziun Uccelin

The Living Circle supports the Fundaziun Uccelin of Sarah and Andreas Caminada . We donate a voluntary contribution of 2 Swiss francs per menu in each of our fine dining restaurants to the independent foundation.

  • MyClimate

With your voluntary donation as part of the myclimate initiative "Cause We Care", you are actively contributing to the careful use of resources and the protection of the environment.

  • Responsible Hotels of Switzerland

Responsible Hotels of Switzerland take responsibility. A company-specific philosophy of ecological and social sustainability is applied by each hotel. Guests can enjoy their stay with a clear conscience.

  • ISO 140001

Environmentally friendly and sustainable hotel management is important to us, which is why we are ISO 14001 certified. The benefit is a reduced environmental footprint of the hotel, which contributes to a healthier environment.

  • Swisstainable

In Switzerland, the needs of guests, the local population, and the environment have always been carefully and consistently taken into account. This is an important and ongoing concern for us all.

  • SapoCycle

SapoCycle is a NGO that collects used soap from hotels and transforms it into life-saving products. The soaps are recycled by people with disabilities and then distributed to improve the hygiene of families in need.

  • Farm to table

Regional, local and tasty: It is all about creating a link between agriculture and the hotel and restaurant trade. This unique blend enables us to operate a “circular economy” with our own businesses.

  • Mobility

Our guests in Ticino and Zurich can easily explore the region using convenient, well-connected public transport – a sustainable and comfortable way to discover local attractions and hidden gems.

  • Switch Off!

We are constantly improving our power consumption and invest in energy-efficient appliances and machines that switch off automatically when they are not in use, helping us reduce our environmental footprint.

  • No food Waste

Our kitchen staff receive thorough training and are continuously encouraged to handle food with care and responsibility. This includes mindful planning, precise portioning, and proper storage techniques to minimize waste.

  • Laundry

The bed linen and terry towels in our rooms at The Living Circle Hotels are only changed upon request. This allows our guests to make an important contribution to saving energy directly.

  • Green Teams

Our Green Teams at each of the three hotels of our City & Lake Resort (Storchen Zürich, Widder Hotel, and Alex Lake Zürich) meet regularly to exchange ideas, track progress, and develop new sustainability initiatives together.

  • esg2go

Our properties are proud to be esg2go reported, reflecting our commitment to transparent, measurable, and responsible business practices across all aspects of our operations and sustainability goals.
